Legends and Nightmares

Where is the 13th Floor, and why is it absent in so many buildings?

Come with us, as we attempt to explain the legend of the 13th floor, and introduce you to Denver's most horrifying haunted experience, the 13th Floor Haunted House.

The levels of a multi story building are frequently numbered sequentially, from "basement", "lobby", "ground", "one", or "1" upwards or occasionally downwards. In some countries, as it is here in the United States, the number 13 is considered unlucky and building owners will sometimes purposefully omit a floor numbered 13. Hence, the 13th floor is sometimes given the number 14.

Even building owners who are not themselves superstitious realize that the desirability of units on a floor 13 might be compromised because of superstitious tenants, or commercial tenants who worry about losing superstitious customers.

Based on an internal review of records, the Otis Elevators company estimates that 85% of the buildings with their elevators do not have a named 13th floor.

So why does this happen? Why are even skeptics so easily convinced that the majority would just rather avoid this floor? What has happened in history to create such a stigma about a 13th Floor? For whatever reasons there may be, there seems to be a multitude of stories about what happens on the 13th floor of numerous buildings, some documented, some not. It seems that it has become largely accepted to just leave it alone, brush it under the rug, and don't talk about it.

A good example is that some have suggested the thirteenth floor in government buildings is not really missing, but actually contains top-secret governmental departments, or more generally that it is proof of something sinister or clandestine going on.
It should be noted that to place a floor between those accessible from an elevator, it is necessary to either take longer to travel between the neighboring floors, or accelerate, both of which would be noticed by the riders. It would also be noticeable from the exterior, requiring either an extra row of windows or a conspicuous gap between rows.

Thus, it would make much more sense to build a secret floor, such as the 13th floor as a basement, making it much easier to hide thirteenth floor locations, in what appear to be single story buildings, underground.

We, the creators of the 13th Floor Haunted House, have discovered locations, right here in Denver, Colorado constructed in the manor described above. Not completely sure of what all of their past uses may have been, it seems that the majority of these locations are currently inhabited as a home for the fortunate or unfortunate souls, living and dead, that have discovered their secret locations when seeking shelter from the environment, or society. Various species of rats, snakes, and spiders have also taken up residence here, living in secret, by their own rules.

This year, as in the past, and future, we will open one of these locations for you to tour. Step inside, take a ride, and travel through the 13th floor, visit the current occupants who call it their "home", witness the oddities and strange occurrences that have created the legend of the 13th floor, and discover why it continues to be one of the world's greatest mysteries.

FAQs Close

Q: Is the 13th Floor, on the 13th floor of a building?
A: If you read our legend page, this will be answered for you.

Q: Will I get my money back if you make it all the way through?
A: Every 113th customer to successfully make it through the 13th Floor, will receive their money back (the price of a general admission ticket).

Q: Are there live animals, reptiles, or insects inside?
A: Yes, there are, please be respectful.

Q: Are there open elevator shafts?
A: Yes, but if you walk where directed, you will make it over them just fine.

Q: What Time are you open?
A: Our calendar changes as it gets closer to Halloween, generally Sunday through Thursday from 7pm to 10pm and Friday and Saturday from 7pm to Midnight.

Q: How much does it cost? Can we buy tickets online?
A: Click here for admission information.

Q: Do you accept credit cards?
A: Yes, Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Q: Are there discounts for children?
A: NO, all tickets are the same price.

Q: How long is the wait in line?
A: It depends, at the beginning of October, there is typically very little wait, maybe 20-30 minutes, at the end of the month near Halloween, it can be a very long wait. The closer you come to opening time (7pm) the shorter the wait. You can always wait for a much shorter time, sometimes no wait at all, if you purchase VIP Fastpass Tickets.

Q: Do you charge for parking?
A: NO, parking is free onsite at the Midtown Industrial Center, there is parking on the front side of Building A and on the back (east) side of Building A (between Building A and B), there is plenty of street parking in the area as well. Please be respectful of the neighboring businesses and do not park in their parking lots without permission.

Q: Is there an age limit or recommendation for the 13th Floor?
A: NO, however due to the graphic nature it is not recommended for small children. We have had young children go through and have a great time and adults who go through and are in tears, you're the parent, you be the judge. A good rule of thumb is if you wouldn't bring your child to a PG-13 rated movie, probably not a good idea to bring them to a haunted house.

Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Sorry, I know dogs are welcome most places in Denver, however, not at the 13th Floor; it's just too darn scary for our furry friends. They'd probably be more comfortable in the car (ventilation please) with the other scaredy cats - err humans.

Q: Is the waiting area inside?
A: Part of the waiting area is inside, part is outside but covered, on busier nights the line will extend outside as well.

Q: Once we've paid for admission are we able to go through again?
A: NO, however, you can purchase another ticket if you would like to walk through again.

Q: How long does it take to go through?
A: It's really difficult to give an answer to this question, some groups run right through others take their time, guess it depends on how you deal with fear. The 13th Floor Haunted House is one of the largest indoor haunted attractions in Colorado, it's pretty big, so you'll be in there long enough to get plenty scared! Once inside you will remain inside to visit both Blood Shed and the 13th Floor.

Q: Is it really scary?
A: YES, It is really scary!

Q: Is The 13th Floor handicap accessible?
A: We do our best to be handicap accessible inside the attraction. There are usually some areas where it may be difficult to get a wheel chair; in these areas we typically provide a bypass.

Q: Is there security?
A: We do our best to have our staff watch out for you, on busy nights there are police officers at the event.

Q: Can we be denied access to The 13th Floor?
A: YES, absolutely, we will not allow foul language, obscene behavior, weapons, alcohol, drugs, etc. etc. etc., come on now, use your head!

Q: Can we take photos inside your haunted house?
A: NO, photography and video recording are not permitted.

Q: Will the actors touch us, or can we touch the actors?
A: NO, the actors will not touch you, please be respectful and do not touch them. Incidental unintentional contact may occur.

Q: What’s this one rated, or is it like other haunted houses in Denver?
A: There are plenty of ratings out there, we prefer HauntedDenver.com. However, we do recommend that you visit several haunted houses, heck there only around once a year, and each one has something different to offer!

Q: Is it the same this year?
A: Nope, we change our layout and design every year. If there are audience favorites from past years, we may incorporate these areas into the new floor plan.

Q: Are group discounts available?
A: YES, give us a call at (303) 355-FEAR to make a reservation for your group.

Q: I want to do a story on your haunted house, who do I talk to?
A: Call (303) 355-FEAR or email info@getscared.com

Real Ghosts Close

Upon arriving at the 13th Floor Haunted House, if you have already purchased your tickets, proceed directly to your designate entrance, General Admission or VIP Fastpass, there is no need to exchange your print at home ticket at the ticket booth. The ticket you printed is your ticket, and includes admission to both of the haunted houses on site, 13th Floor and Blood Shed. If you have not purchased your tickets yet, you can do so at the onsite box office.

The show starts once you hit the waiting areas, monsters that have escaped from 13th Floor and Blood Shed are lurking, be sure to stay aware of your surroundings.

Once in the building, you will first enter Blood Shed Haunted House. Blood Shed is an adventure in hillbilly horror. Enter the dilapidated farmhouse, or possibly more accurately described "shack". This is not your average family. Sure, they love each other, but there's nothing they love more than the unsuspecting visitors that are unlucky enough to happen upon their home. You'll travel through the farm house, out into the "Blood Shed", and return one last time to the house to say goodbye to your hosts, hopefully.

After exiting Blood Shed, you will enter the arena queue for 13th Floor. There is live entertainment nightly, including cirque style performers and dancers. Each year this 13th Floor pre-show is changed to reflect a different theme. A great way to pass a little time before you board the elevator to the 13th Floor.

The entrance to 13th Floor is through a broken out block wall. Beyond this excavated hole is a loading area for the elevator, please wait here until directed to board the elevator. 13th Floor handlers will assist you in loading on the elevator and getting you to the 13th Floor, but once you are on the 13th Floor, you are on your own. Please hold on tight, the ride to the 13th Floor is an intense experience.

If you successfully make it through 13th Floor you will exit the building, keep in mind, every 113th person who successfully completes the 13th Floor will get their money back, the price of a general admission ticket.

What to expect on Weekdays - Significantly less people attend on weekdays, therefore we are able to offer a much better pace/spacing for travelling through the haunted houses. If it is important to you to have less people travelling through the haunted houses with you, you should attend on a weekday. Next to Friday and Saturday, Thursday and Sunday would be our next busiest nights. Other weekdays have less attendance. This changes the closer we get to Halloween.

What to expect on Weekends - Part of the haunted house experience seems to be waiting in line with your friends and family, we understand that. We also understand that most people have to work on weekdays, and Friday and Saturday are the best days for them to attend. We do our best on these busy nights to pace the show, but on some busy nights patrons will be travelling through the haunted houses much faster than on weekdays. We don't want you to have to wait in line any longer than necessary, therefore, this faster pace will create areas where patrons will be going through in larger groups. Although our show is consistent any night that you attend, special direction and adjustments are made to accommodate larger numbers of patrons on weekends.

Bottom line is this, we do our best to give you the best show, every night. If it's important for you to have a more "alone" feeling at the haunted house, come on a weekday. If you enjoy the energy and excitement that is fueled by more people, attend on a weekend. Either way, you're sure to enjoy the experience.

Final note, on our busy weekend nights and weekday nights closer to Halloween, we can sell out. To ensure your entry, purchase tickets online in advance, you can do this any time during our season up to the day you plan to attend. For those tech savvy you can even purchase your tickets online from your smartphone on your way to the haunted house, your tickets are emailed to you immediately, you can pull them up on your smart phone screen and we can scan them at the entrance right on your phone. If you have an online ticket in hand, you will get in that night. However, in the event of a sellout night, our onsite box office will close early. Don't worry, we stay until the last ticketed patron in line is through both haunted houses.
